  1. Where is your support site?

ECWH is an all-volunteer mission of SPCK/USA. As a volunteer staff, we cannot provide 24/7 service. If you have questions, please contact our support team for assistance. If you believe the server is down and the support email is not working, please contact John O. or Sally directly.

  2. Do you allow ftp, cgi's, or php?

Yes. Thanks to our server at Dragon Networks, we now offer these services.

  3. How can you offer hosting for free?

ECWH is a mission of SPCK/USA and Dragon Networks. SPCK/USA provides us guidance, governance and continuity. Dragon Networks donates our server space and support. Day to day operations are provided by our dedicated, volunteer Host Team. If you would like to contribute to our organization, contact the Host Team or Make a Donation to SPCK/USA Online

  4. Why do you limit hosting to Episcopal organizations?

Our primary mission is to support the Episcopal Church's mission "to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ". We do this through our efforts to remove the perceived barriers that keep episcopal organizations from communicating effectively using the resources of the Internet. To the extent that the Episcopal Church is in communion with other demominations, such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and has significant ecumenical and interfaith initiatives including its membership in Churches Uniting in Christ we will happily support any church organization that supports these common goals.

  5. What advantages are there to choosing ECWH over a traditional ISP?

First, there is an inversion of accountability for the quality and effectiveness of your site. In the traditional model, ISP's don't want you to generate traffic on fixed monthly fees (it costs them). Their only interest is that you get the minimum amount of traffic that will justify your site (their accountability is to shareholders - their goal is to maximize revenue and minimize expenses). As episcopalians, ECWH shares your goal to increase traffic and increase membership as a function of the 2020 initiative. Our accountability is to God.

Second, ECWH is attempting to marshall the disparate technical talents within Episcopal church islands and bring them to bear upon a common web application framework to benefit all Episcopal organizations. In the long run, this means less web site maintenance work for you while simultaneously increasing your site's functionality, quality, and effectiveness.

This, of course, doesn't mean you shouldn't use a traditional ISP. ECWH doesn't support all the tools that you might use and cannot currently offer a mission critical level of service. Hence, a traditional ISP might in fact be a better fit for your organization. Even if you choose another hosting service, please feel free to use our volunteer support services in support of your website.

  6. If I register a domain through Regest.com or any other domain name registrar, who "owns" it and why can't it also be free?

You "own" the registration of the name, and have all the powers associated with it for the period of time you have paid the registration for.

ECWH has a relationship with an accredited registrar, regest.com because it is owned by Dragon Networks who donate our server and support. Dragon Networks is a reseller for eNom, Inc. through their regest.com website. Our only motivation in encouraging use of the regest.com website is that it is easier for us to communicate with Dragon Networks than with other registrars. You are perfectly free to use any accredited registrar for your domain name for an ECWH website, it's just easier for you and us when you don't.
